Understanding Colors in CC3

CC3 uses a 256-color palette. Each color is identified internally using a number from 1-256. Click the Color indicator on the status bar to set the current color for new entities, and click Change Properties image\MCHANGE.gif to change the color of existing entities.

Creating Custom Palettes

You can edit any of the colors on the palette using Define on the color dialog box. You can then save those colors with the drawing using Attach to Drawing on Drawing Properties image\presets.gif. If you edit any colors, all pre-existing entities in the drawing with those colors will take on the new color, as will any symbols with those colors you later insert. For this reason we suggest you create custom palettes on new maps, rather than existing ones. The range of colors from 176 to 207 are a good choice to customize, as we have tried to avoid using those colors in our pre-defined vector symbols. Avoid changing colors 0-31.

We suggest that if you want o work with custom colors, you create a Wizard template with the color palette you want, define drawing tools, and work using that.

Shaded Varicolor Symbols and Custom Palettes

CC3's vector shaded varicolor symbols rely on the color palette being organized in bands of 16 shades., like the default palette is. If you just change some of the colors (eg 176-207) and avoid placing shaded varicolors in those colors then you can add these symbols. Stick to bands of color and you will be fine.

Additional Colors

If you need colors beyond 256, or don't want to create a custom palette, you can add any number of solid colors you like by adding a bitmap fill style consisting of a small block of solid color. Choose a fill style name which makes them easy to remember if you later want to select them using Select By Fill Style.
